| Speak Up is a project to support wider availability of child protection information to Aboriginal communities and service providers in NSW. It responds to recommendations of the Breaking the Silence report, and the Interagency Plan to Tackle Child Sexual Assault in Aboriginal Communities 2006-2011. Development of the project was coordinated by the Department of Corrective Services in partnership with the Education Centre Against Violence, NSW Health and the Department of Community Services. Another key component of developing Speak Up was to consult extensively with Aboriginal communities from the Shoalhaven, Boggabilla and Toomelah. The Speak Up resources comprise two packages, including documentary interviews, dramatic scenarios and commentaries, with over 4 hours of materials on two DVDs. One DVD is for use only by skilled facilitators within training contexts across government human services Agencies, non-government organizations and with communities. It comprises two dramatic scenarios, Bingo Night and Not My Sister, and commentaries that focus on the key issues. There is also a Facilitator’s Manual to guide use. The other DVD package aimed at wider distribution to Aboriginal communities and service providers. It consists of interviews with Aboriginal people about the facts and dynamics of child sexual assault. It has a strong emphasis on prevention and contains good news stories about initiatives already underway. The package requires skilled facilitation for use with groups and there is a booklet to guide use. Both seek to raise awareness about child sexual assault and provide information about prevention and available services. |
