Translating the Family Violence & Healthy Relationships Community Education Module and Relevant Resources

There is little translated information about domestic/family violence and child protection in community languages, particularly in some of the new and emerging communities. It is very important that the community receives information that reflects the discussions they have been involved in during the ‘Family Harmony and Healthy Relationships’ sessions. Translations of handout material have been completed for the following language groups: Arabic, Vietnamese, Turkish, Chinese, Spanish, Somali, Tamil (Sri Lanka), Dinka (Southern Sudan), Samoan, Dari (Afghanistan), Serbian and Kurdish.

Translations have been produced in both written form as fact sheets and in audio form as a CD. This is to ensure that all community groups have access to information about domestic/family violence regardless of their literacy levels.

Below is an outline of the translated information that is being collated:

Fact Sheets

  • ‘What is Domestic Violence?’ - information explaining the different forms of violence to support the notion that what constitutes violence in some cultures is not necessarily the same in others and highlight that domestic/family violence is a crime in Australia.
  • ‘The Effects on Children’ – this information highlights the effects of domestic/family violence on children, the fact that they do not have to necessarily experience the violence themselves to be affected by it. Violence has a huge impact on children who witness the violence or feel the fear and tension in the environment they live in.
  • ‘What are Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs), What are Domestic Violence Provisions’ – basic information on some of the legal aspects of AVOs and DVPs such as who can get them, where from, how etc. There are also various negative community perceptions about these issues that may act as access barriers, so this fact sheet aims to provide women and their communities with clear and practical information.
  • ‘List of Services’ – this sheet provides women with phone numbers of the main services that they can access for assistance in domestic/family violence situations.

Layout of the training packages is almost complete and printing of the packages and the translated material is expected to be completed by June 2008. The production of audio CD Roms for identified languages is about to commence, along with the development of a ‘Jigsaw Game – Equality Vs Power and Control (Duluth), which will be used as a tool to generate group discussions about tactics and dynamics of domestic/family violence.
