Title:

Cultural competence in working with suicidality and interpersonal trauma

Date:
Mac/PC Dual Format

Category:
Mental Health, Child Protection, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault

Target Group:
Intended for use by frontline workers in a range of settings including: mental health services, domestic / family violence support services, sexual assault centres, youth services, alcohol and other drugs facilities, and physicians in General Practice.

Description:
The aim of the CD Rom is to enhance the cultural competence of clinicians and case-workers who are working in these areas in relation to suicide risk assessment.

The CD Rom introduces the concept of a 'dual-track suicide risk assessment' model that emphasises the need to assess for risk of harm from another person, at the same time as assessing for risk of harm to self.

An 'intersectional cultural approach' that takes account of the full range of dimensions of human diversity, provides the framework for suicide risk assessment that is proposed in this learning resource.

There are several components to this CD Rom. These are:

  • seven video vignette case studies
  • questions for the learner to consider in relation to each case study
  • case worker responses to the questions
  • 'Core Content' slides which are accessible to the learner at all times
  • case-specific slides
  • a note-taking facility and a 'Resources' section containing an introduction to the CD Rom, a glossary of acronyms, a literature review and reference, and further reading lists

This learning resource was developed as part of ECAV's 'Interpersonal Trauma, Suicidality & Cultural Diversity' project funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health & Ageing under the National Suicide prevention Strategy.
